Performance factors on sailing

The most of us think about sailing performance just looking at factors like the sail trim or the right tactical choice. But this vision should be wider…
Sailing is a multiform sport that includes various disciplines within itself. Usually, for the most of them, we are tempted to attribute the results to elements linked to the boat alone. The role of the physical status of the sailors, for example, doesn’t weight so much for the most of us.
Trying to be more specific, otherwise, we could focus on two main areas affecting the performance of a sailboat:
– Sailboat factors area
– Sailor factors area
Exploring the Sailboat’s factors affecting the performance, we can recognize common topics like technical choices (the sail trim, as seen before), tactical choices and reliability of the whole boat.
Moving to the Sailor’s factors area we can write down a similar list: physical fitness, decision-making ability and organic reliability.
As we can see both the areas come with similar key points affecting the performance. Zooming in, we can also realize how the list of factors about sailors causes effects on the list of factors about the sailboat. For example, a good physical condition and decision-making ability let me do the right tactical choice and make me able to apply the right technical choices at the right time. On the opposite, even with a good technical ability but with a low mental focus, we can’t make the right tactical decision and this will affect the result.
All this vision brings us to a big question: how much do the sailors’ factors weight on the sailboats’ factors and on the performance?
Well, there isn’t a fast and easy answer. Anyway, we can say that we should start analyzing the contest at first. Size of the boat, number of crew, daily sailing vs. a week sailing race make all the difference.
This first short post has the aim to give you a different point of view regarding sailing. It doesn’t mean physical fitness affects only the raw performance of a racing but it could improve the sailors’ health and his ability to enjoy even an easy day of sailing the breeze…
